Savitha was a clerk whose job was to sit in an operating room and enter the data. She did that job for a few months and shifted to another hospital as an executive entering discharge summaries. One day, she got an opportunity to be a secretarial help for a doctor. She did not have a professional qualification in secretarial work. She had simple abilities, such as booking an appointment, engaging people who come to meet the doctor for consulting. She worked very hard when something was asked of her. She would go and see the patients and ensure the admission process was perfect, the counseling was done and the patients were comfortable and all set for the surgery. She did all this, because she was the person who fixed their appointment with the doctor and later for the surgery. Her job description was simple – set the appointment. But, Savitha goes to the ward and interacts with the patients. This simple gesture made the nervous patients extremely comfortable and happy as Savitha was giving them personal attention. Gradually, she was professionally taught to counsel the patients about surgery. She was so eager to learn that she would stand beside the doctor and understood each and every aspect of the operation and its processes. Today, she is a counselor and advised over 500 patients and their families. She’s not a secretary anymore. She’s a counselor and growing fast into several unexplored areas. More than half of the doctor’s community knows her and respects here skills.

Muniraj was a ward boy. His job was to clean up the room and fix things when needed. But, he did more than that. He stood behind and learnt every move of the pre-and-post operative procedures. He did that for over 15 years and still does it. He scrubs up for the surgery, understands the entire process, assists everyone in the operation theater, manages the surgery 360 degrees. Today, he is a crown jewel to the hospital he currently works for. There are at least 50 theater nurses who are eternally indebted to Muniraj for the skill sets they’ve acquired from him. He was not supposed to teach skill sets; he was expected to be doing a ward boy’s job. They were the nurses who are supposed to know everything. But, they come to the hospital raw and learn everything. Muniraj teaches them how to sterilize, prepare for the theater and every little mannerism that makes a nurse precious. Today, all these nurses are at international hospitals, but nobody ever forgets Muniraj. He is so popular today, which every hospital wants to have him on their team. Muniraj is not a ward boy anymore; he’s the lifeblood of an operation theater.

What made Savitha and Muniraj shine and grow? Well, the management and philosophy books might say a dozen things about it. But, here is what I honestly believe they did:

They gave 25% more of what was expected out of them. They did it consistently in every instance.

Please take a moment and think about it again,

“Give 25% more than what is expected out of you.”

In life, if you want to be on the winning side and if you want to be really happy, give more. What you give, you get back in multiples. I am not talking about financials here. In friendship, give 25% more than what you get in terms of love and support. Do the same as a spouse, child, parent, employee and even an employer. Anything you do, give more than what is expected of you. Do that to yourself too. Give yourself 25% more than what you normally do.

Savitha and Muniraj, both, get a brief to do the job. While doing the job, they find something very interesting and do it without any expectation. It’s amazing the effect that is on the person who receives it. Even if they have done a fantastic job of what was expected out of them, that wouldn’t have the pull on the strings of the heart as much as the extra that was done. The sheer joy is incredible.

Savitha and Muniraj became superstars as they were giving 25% more all their life. It’s just by giving that 25% more they learned so many new skills, performed beyond the job description, made new friends, became invaluable and reached greater heights in life. This simple thing made their whole life a joyful one. Not just theirs, but everyone around them too.

If there is a better morning prayer for all of us, it would possibly be “God give me the energy and the attitude to give 25% more of what is expected out of me”. That’s the real winner in life.

The joy of giving is always bigger than the joy of taking. If you can be a giver, it’s a great way of finding joy, it’s a great way of building relationships. If you do things without transactional value, the intangible benefits you get are far more powerful than anything else. You are going to stay on someone’s mind forever because you have gone beyond the call of the duty.

Goodness will take you beyond your abilities.

A few people feel that asking 25% more without any returns is exploitation. But, it’s not that. It’s an opportunity to explore your horizons.

Giving 25% extra to what you do is equal to getting 125% in return.

Giving adds an extra dimension to your personality each time you give. Even more, giving adds a thousand blessings to the life that you give to.

Come, let’s give 25% more.
